Sweet & Savory Toasts

One of life's (or rather, breakfast's) most difficult questions is the inevitable - "Sweet or Savory?"

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and I often find myself facing this predicament. One day I realized that actually, you don't have to choose! Let's do sweet AND savory, and make all of our tastebuds happy.

And when it comes to sweet and savory toasts, these two combos are my absolute favorite. Give 'em a try and feel free to switch up the flavors, herbs, and ingredients based on what you have available. There's no way to go wrong.

Savory - Avocado Toast with Artichoke Bruschetta & Dill

1 slice of your favorite bread (I use sourdough)

1/2 small avocado, thinly sliced

3 tablespoons artichoke antipasto (optional - can leave out or substitute with olive tapenade, roasted red pepper paste, or any other spread on hand)

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 sprigs fresh dill, de-stemmed

salt & cracked black pepper

squeeze of lemon

Start by toasting the bread.

When it's done, layer the thinly sliced avocado on the bread.

Evenly distribute the artichoke antipasto in dollops around the surface of the bread. Followed by an even drizzle of olive oil, fresh dill leaves, salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon on top.

Sweet - Almond Butter with Sliced Strawberries & Date Drizzle

1 slice of your favorite bread (I use whole wheat sourdough)

2 tablespoons almond butter (or your favorite nut butter)

1/3 cup sliced strawberries

1 tablespoon date syrup (or other liquid sweetener like honey or maple syrup)

1/2 tablespoon shredded coconut flakes or hemp seeds

Spread an even layer of nut butter on the surface of the toasted bread.

Layer the sliced strawberries on top, drizzle with liquid sweetener, and top with an even layer of coconut flakes or hemp seeds, if using.
